Challenges
Challenges are problems being experienced by education, government and non-profit organizations. Cal Poly’s 5G Innovation Lab emphasizes hands-on learning by engaging students in real-world applied use cases of 5G technology and private cellular, powering innovative research and expanding campus connectivity. Utilizing the success of the DxHub innovation methodology, we work with industry to aid public sector and government partners and overcome digital transformation challenges through integrating students and faculty into problem-solving initiatives.
Paso Airport Spaceport Initiative
Cal Poly’s Advanced Wireless Lab is extending its private 5G network into aerospace operations by deploying a CBRS-based LTE/5G corridor from campus to the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport. Designed to support horizontal space launch activity and student workforce development, this will be the first university-integrated private 5G network in the U.S. built for a live operational aerospace environment.
Swanton Ranch & The BEACON Project
Cal Poly’s Advanced Wireless Lab is advancing connectivity in remote environments through BEACON, a fully autonomous, off-grid cellular system deployed at Swanton Pacific Ranch. Designed for resilience without traditional power or backhaul, it enables reliable, carrier-grade connectivity in challenging and environmentally sensitive terrain.
The Pier & Coastal Private 5G Deployment
Cal Poly’s Advanced Wireless Lab extended its private 5G network to the marine research Pier, a challenging coastal environment that supports marine science, robotics, and field-based education. Using CBRS-based infrastructure, the deployment delivers reliable, high-performance connectivity for real-time data exchange in a location that previously lacked dependable coverage.
Frost Center Smart Building Wireless Deployment
The Frost Center for Research and Innovation is a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration at Cal Poly, bringing together students and faculty across multiple fields. A private 5G network deployed by the Advanced Wireless Lab provides high-capacity, ultra-reliable connectivity to support advanced research systems, digital collaboration, and emerging technologies.
Poly Canyon Emergency Connectivity Challenge
Poly Canyon is a unique outdoor lab at Cal Poly where students conduct hands-on research and build experimental structures in a rugged natural environment. To overcome limited cellular coverage and improve safety, a private 5G network provides reliable emergency communication and e-911 connectivity for students, visitors, and first responders.
Cal Poly Digital Twin
Assisting Construction Management, the digital twin created provides a highly detailed geospatial model that can significantly enhance 5G network planning of Cal Poly. By accurately mapping building layouts, terrain, and obstructions, the model helps engineers optimize small cell placement. Learn more in the Construction Management news letter.
