Poly Canyon Emergency Connectivity Challenge

overview

Poly Canyon is one of Cal Poly’s most unique outdoor learning environments, a rugged natural landscape where students design experimental structures, conduct environmental research, and explore engineering projects in real-world conditions.

However, the canyon’s remote terrain also presents a critical challenge: reliable emergency communication.

In areas with hills, dense vegetation, and limited infrastructure, cellular coverage can be inconsistent or unavailable. For students, researchers, and visitors working in the canyon, this creates a safety gap where emergency calls or responder communication may be delayed.

To address this challenge, the Cal Poly Advanced Wireless Lab deployed a private 5G network designed specifically to support emergency connectivity and e-911 services across Poly Canyon.

The system extends secure, reliable cellular coverage into the canyon, ensuring that first responders, campus safety teams, and individuals in the field can maintain communication when it matters most.

The Challenge

Remote environments often suffer from weak or inconsistent cellular coverage, especially when commercial carriers prioritize high-density population areas.

Poly Canyon’s landscape includes:

  • steep terrain and elevation changes
  • remote trails and research locations

  • experimental student structures and outdoor labs

  • limited wired infrastructure

These factors make traditional connectivity solutions difficult to deploy.

In emergency situations whether a medical incident, wildfire risk, or accident during field work communication delays can significantly affect response times.

Cal Poly needed a solution capable of providing reliable emergency connectivity across the canyon without requiring extensive fiber or large infrastructure projects.

Project Scale & Impact

Key Milestones & Scope

  • Deployment of private 5G coverage across key Poly Canyon areas

  • Integration with Cal Poly’s campus wireless core network

  • Support for e-911 communication and emergency responder connectivity

  • Expansion of coverage to remote trails, research sites, and student projects

The deployment creates a dedicated wireless layer supporting public safety operations in environments where traditional networks may fail.

Strategic Network Advantages

Reliable e-911 Connectivity

The private 5G deployment ensures that individuals in Poly Canyon can maintain cellular access for emergency calls, even in areas where public carrier coverage may be limited.

By extending wireless infrastructure into the canyon, Cal Poly improves communication reliability for students, researchers, and visitors exploring the area.

Enhanced First Responder Communications

Campus police, emergency medical services, and public safety teams rely on dependable communication systems when responding to incidents.

The private network provides consistent data and voice connectivity, allowing responders to coordinate efforts, share information, and maintain situational awareness during emergencies.

Smart Safety Monitoring

The network also supports connected safety technologies, including:

  • environmental monitoring sensors

  • remote cameras for situational awareness

  • drone-assisted emergency assessment

  • location-based safety systems

These tools help campus safety teams respond faster and more effectively to potential hazards.

Student Learning and Public Safety Innovation

The Poly Canyon deployment is not just an infrastructure project, it is also a learning platform for students studying wireless engineering, emergency communications, and smart infrastructure.

Students participate in:

  • RF planning for complex terrain

  • installation and optimization of outdoor small cells

  • integration of emergency communication systems
  • testing wireless performance during simulated emergency scenarios

This hands-on experience prepares students to design communication systems used in disaster response, rural connectivity, and public safety networks worldwide.

How the Advanced Wireless Lab Is Approaching It

The Advanced Wireless Lab applied its proven deployment methodology to the Poly Canyon environment:

  • RF propagation modeling tailored to canyon terrain

  • strategic placement of CBRS private 5G small cells

  • integration with the Cal Poly campus wireless core network

  • support for public safety communication systems
  • student-led monitoring and maintenance of the network

This approach ensures the system remains both operationally reliable and educationally valuable.

Impact

The Poly Canyon emergency connectivity project demonstrates how private wireless networks can strengthen public safety in challenging environments.

By extending reliable 911 connectivity into a remote outdoor learning space, Cal Poly enhances safety while creating a real-world platform for innovation in wireless communication.

The deployment also highlights a broader vision:
universities can serve not only as centers of education but also as testing grounds for technologies that improve safety, resilience, and connectivity in communities everywhere.

Through projects like this, Cal Poly continues to show that Learn by Doing includes building the networks that protect and connect the world.
