Noyce history

Cal Poly and the Noyce Trust in conversation about how to create impact at Cal Poly.

2019-2021

Cal Poly proposes forming a new interdisciplinary school combining three
departments (four majors) under one umbrella — Electrical Engineering
(EE), Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE), and Computer
Engineering (CPE). Together, these departments will create interdisciplinary
collaboration opportunities for departments and faculty doing applied
computing across the university in fields such as statistics.

Fall 2021

Noyce Trust agrees to fund school startup.

Fall 2021

Faculty representatives from EE, CSSE and CPE form a steering committee
and work through the winter and spring quarters of 2022 to draft and submit
the proposal for the Noyce School to the Cal Poly Academic Senate, who after
review recommend establishing the school to Cal Poly leadership.

Spring 2022

Cal Poly announces the establishment of the
Noyce School of Applied Computing with
funding from the Robert N. Noyce Trust.

June 2022

Chris Lupo, Ph.D., is named the founding director of the Noyce School of Applied Computing. Lupo has been a faculty member at Cal Poly since 2008, most recently serving as chair of the Computer Science and
Software Engineering Department.

Summer 2023

Students from the Noyce School participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) working with faculty research leads from EE, CSSE and CPE departments.

Summer 2023

An endowment is established with a gift of $250,000 to support scholarships for transfer students in the Noyce School by Susan M.
Armstrong & Keith A. Marzullo.

Summer 2023

The Noyce Faculty Council is formed from representatives of the three
departments to participate in a shared governance structure where
they work with the Director of the Noyce School to collectively make
decisions for the school.

Fall 2023

The Noyce Trust pledges $1 million to support Cleared for Success National Security Workforce Program.

March 2024

CSU Board of Trustee approves the naming of the Noyce School.

May 2024

Students from the Noyce School participate in SURP.

Summer 2024

Renovation of director’s office, Computer Engineering department office and a shared lab/classroom space that all departments will utilize.

Summer 2023 - Fall 2024

Fifteen new tenure-line faculty are hired in the Noyce School and start in the ’24-’25 academic year. The Noyce School not only helped recruit these individuals through marketing and communications but is also
investing in their success with contributions to professional development for all new hires.

Fall 2024

A gift of $100,000 from the LYCKE TRUST, Bo
A. Lycke, Trustee, establishes the Noyce School Distinguished Speaker Series. The inaugural event features Silicon Valley icon Steve Wozniak.

November 8, 2024

As of the end of the calendar year, the Noyce School has 2,200 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students currently enrolled, as well as 130 faculty (lecturers, tenure-track).
